I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
Psalms 121:1-8 NLT
There are days when even before my feet hit the floor I am already feeling weighed down by the spirit of depression. I do battle with myself as my body and mind refuse to wake up and face the day ahead.
Once I have somehow found the strength to resist the temptation to hide under my duvet, I sit on the edge of the bed staring at the floor. And so begins a day with me looking down. Weighed down with exhaustion, anxiety, erratic emotions and a sense of futility.
But I have seen that when I constantly walk with my head down, I become so overwhelmed by my circumstances that I miss what God is trying to show me.
In Psalm 121 David tells us that when we are feelinģ hopeless we need to look up! Not to the mountains which speak to us so much of God’s character, but beyond to God Himself, the Creator of the mountains.
When I stop to think about it, I am blown away that this Almighty Creator God takes notice of me and is the lifter of my head. How amazing that even when I can’t find the strength to look up, He still walks alongside me, supporting me as I take each step.
What an incredible comfort to know that He never sleeps or takes His eye off me. Not even for a moment. He knows my struggle and is ready to protect me and strengthen me whenever I feel anxious or overwhelmed.
Oh Lord, how this gives me hope! To know that when depression weighs me down and I want to curl up in a ball and disappear, that You come alongside me and cover me with the shade of your protection.
Gather me in Your arms. Hold me close to your chest Dear Father! For it is here where I am comforted by Your warmth and reassured by the steady beat of Your heart.
May I be reassured by Your heart that beats with love for me. Please be the the lifter of my head, today and always.
But you, Lord , are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
